Playa Larga is located approximately 13 km from the Bay of Pigs, in the province of Matanzas, an extensive sandy area of 4 km in length. Playa Larga is the typical image of the Cuban Caribbean: calm and clean waters, white sand, palm trees and the exotic vegetal mantle that covers the surrounding areas.
Here you can make sea baths in warm waters and enjoy contact with the nature of Montemar (Great Natural Park Montemar, formerly known as Ciénaga de Zapata National Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2001). The International Birdwatching Center is located in Playa Larga and constitutes a starting point for the different places of day or night contemplation in the intricate Montemar, it is the most important in Cuba and has specialized guides.
You also practice wall diving. The submarine zones have an enormous attraction in the abruptness of the oceanic wall, extraordinarily close to the coast and covered with beautiful corals, of which you can observe colonies of black coral, gorgonia, sponges and other species of the varied underwater flora and fauna. There is also the possibility of venturing into the underwater caverns belonging to the Montemar speleo-lacustrine system, some of which reach 70 meters deep. In these caves you can see the blind fish.
At the La Salina Fauna Refuge, it is possible to observe up to 165 different migratory and native species, including flamingo, kelp and cranes colonies. Other sites of ecotourism interest are: the Hatiguanico River, the Santo Tomas Wildlife Refuge, the Ictiofauna Indigenous Station, the Cotorras Reproduction Station, and the Crocodile Farm.
